D-link DSL-G604T + LINKSYS WAG54G

Hi,

I would like to use a LINKSYS WAG54G as a repeater to connect to a D-link DSL-G604T (wich is connected to internet).

I saw that WAG54G supports WDS.

1.- Does D-link supports WDS ?
2.- If not, is there any way to configure the WAG54G as a wireless client and the D-link to accept connections from the WAG54G ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

"I would like to use a LINKSYS WAG54G as a repeater"
I thought the WAG54G was a DSL modem/router, so you may not be able to do that.

I have successfully used a DWL-900AP+ and a DWL-2100AP to repeat the DSL-G604T. I suspect that most (all?) multi-mode access points with a repeater mode will repeat the traffic from a DSL-G604T. I suspect that is also true for dedicated repeaters, often described as 'range extenders' but I haven't personally tried one.

Most manufacturers use caution when describing which products will work together; there is no 'official' interoperability testing for WDS by the Wi-Fi Alliance trade body. But my experience is that D-Link products work fine with the Linksys and Netgear products that I have used.

To answer your specific questions:

"1.- Does D-link supports WDS ?"
Yes. But that's a very general question...
If you mean, 'Will a repeater work with the D-Link DSL-G604T, then the answer is also Yes. Transparent wireless-Ethernet bridge devices using WDS will also work with the DSL-G604T.

[Note: I'm not being pedantic, it's just that many people - and many manufacturers do not understand what 'WDS' is.]

"2.- If not, is there any way to configure the WAG54G as a wireless client and the D-link to accept connections from the WAG54G ?"
While I'm not familiar with the (now superseded) WAG54G, I suspect the answer is No. The device is a router, and almost certainly does not have a 'wireless client' mode.

However, it is possible to connect the WAG54G to the DSL-G604T and use it as an additional access point + switch, which may achieve what you want. In summary, what you need to do is:
- give the second router a static address in the DSL-G604T's subnet, for example 192.168.1.100
- disable its DHCP server
- connect LAN port to LAN port

Find the necessary info here. Although it's for a different brand, the principle is the same.

When operating two access points, I suggest that you set the same SSID on both, but set each to a different (non-overlapping) channel. If the DSL-G604T is set to channel 6, I suggest you set the other access point to channel 1 or 11.

[Aside: In Europe (except France and Spain), the recommended non-overlapping channels are 2, 7, 13. However, most devices come preset for one of the US non-overlapping channels (1, 6, 11) so that's what your neighbours will likely be using. I suggest you stick to 1, 6, 11]

On a more general point, I recommend that you avoid using a repeater if at all possible. Why? Because you will experience an approximate 50% drop in throughput for devices associated with the repeater. Why? Because consumer-class devices are simplex devices with a single radio and must first listen, then re-transmit.

If you have a 'dead spot' try experimenting with device position, try using a higher gain antenna, or use an additional access point connected to the DSL-G604T by Ethernet (see info above). Any of these solutions will be better than using a repeater. But feel free to experiment :)

Hope this helps

I've not used a recent model of the Netgear DG834G, so I'm not sure what WDS functions it supports [Aside: Earlier hardware revisions of the DG834G were almost identical internally to the DSL-G604T, being based on the same Texas Instruments reference design]

V3 firmware for the DSl-G604T supports a number of WDS functions. These are:

- Bridge Mode. In bridge mode, the access point communicates only with other access points. No wireless clients can associate with an access point in bridge mode. In bridge mode, the access point has the option of acting as a Root (click the Activate as Root box to enable). In Root mode the AP becomes a primary link for the Wireless LAN to the Ethernet and Internet. As the Root access point, there cannot be a wireless Uplink through the AP. Only wireless Downlinks may be designated. To designate a Downlink, enable up to 4 downlinks (Downlink 1 – 4) and type the MAC address of the AP used for downlink in the space provided. Use Bridge mode if you are using the access point to connect to a distant Ethernet LAN.

- Repeater Mode. In repeater mode the access point can communicate with other access points and wireless clients. Note that repeater mode will limit the amount of throughput of wireless clients to the Ethernet. As with bridge mode, repeater mode allows the AP to function as the Root.

- Crude. Crude Mode is recommended for wireless LANs using multiple vendors wireless chip solutions. If wireless stations are using TI chips, use Bridge or Repeater modes.

As I implied above, some revisions of the DG834G are based on the same TI chipset as the DSL-G604T, so the notes about Crude Mode may be relevant. However, the key thing will be to 'suck it and see' - the problem is really that although WDS is described in outline in IEEE 802.11, its functions are by no means standardised. This means that certain chipset vendors (notably Broadcom) have implemented WDS functionality which is not defined in the standard. This may be relevant to you, as later hardware revisions of the DG834G are based on a Broadcom chipset.

D-Link UK has not released V3 firmware for the DSL-G604T (they never even released V2 !) but you can find it on the D-Link RU site here.

Hope this helps - let us know how you get on

i was looking for a g604t firmware supporting (at least some) WDS functions and i found this forum:

is anybody here using the WDS function of V3.02 firmware on a G604t revA/B ?

is g604t(revA or B) + fw3.02 RU  a stable combo?

thanks

Hi All,

> V3 firmware for the DSL-G604T supports a number of WDS functions.

My DSL-G604T shows Firmware Version :  V3.02B01T01.RU.20071228  by I can't see any of these WDS functions?

Any suggestions?  I'm looking to use custom firmware to make the DSL-G604T act in wireless client mode to connect to an existing wireless network and provide internet connected presentation on its 4 ethernet ports.
