Superphone

I've been a fan of HTC since my first Windows Mobile handset in 2004 (the Typhoon/Orange SPV C500) so when I came to replace my 2 year old HTC Desire I didn't look much further than HTC's current range. I've tried Android ROMs without HTC Sense on my Desire and always went back to a Sense ROM as I missed all the little tweaks HTC throw in that make the experience that bit better. I know lots of people don't like Sense but I think it's great. The new version is a big improvement over Sense on the Desire and makes using the phone a real pleasure. The Sensation XE is very well built and feels pretty solid. It's not such a leap in size from the Desire to the Sensation XE as I was expecting and the extra screen size/resolution isn't over the top. Losing the physical buttons is no big deal as the touch-sensitive buttons respond very quickly. The lack of an optical trackpoint is more of a concern as I used to use it a lot on my Desire but I'm getting used to not having it (in fact, having such a big screen means it's less likely to be needed as it's easier to select text/move the cursor just by tapping). The power button has swapped sides a the top since my Desire and the micro-USB socket has gone from the bottom to the lower-left edge. Both of these keep catching me out still but aren't a problem. The 8MP camera takes great shots (much better than the Desire's 5MP sensor, even at the same resolution) and the front-facing VGA camera does the job reasonably well. I haven't tested taking video yet so can't comment on the 1080p abilities. The audio quality in calls is excellent as is the speaker (for a phone anyway) but the Beats earbuds are fantastic. Music and films sound superb and the noise-isolating nature of the earbuds mean environmental sounds don't spoil the experience. A2DP bluetooth streaming and handsfree work flawlessly but I haven't been able to test the DLNA or HDMI output capabilities yet. The CPU is amazingly quick as you'd expect from a dual-core 1.5GHz processor so everything is very smooth and responsive within apps and simply navigating around the handset. The huge 768Mb internal memory means the phone will take loads off apps before running low - a big criticism of the Desire which would run out with just a dozen apps (depending on which ones of course!). My handset from Expansys came with a 16Gb microSD card installed which should last quite a while. After 5 days using the new phone, I've been hammering the battery constantly so I can't really comment on the battery life. My Desire needed charging every night so I reckon the new phone won't be any different. Huge screen and fast CPU mean the battery will likely drain faster but the higher capacity should compensate. So far, so good.

HTC Sensation XE

I am an android fan but tried a Nokia Luma 800 over Christmas and while I thought it was good it is not as good as android yet!! What looking at the Nokia did, was make me realize that my current Samsung Galaxy S2 feels poorly made and cheep! So I started to look around for a new phone I have always had HTC before and so I started my look at there range of phones. I chose the Sensation EX because of it spec and performance not really because of the Beats Links. In fact it was my kids that had to tell me what Beats even was. I have now had the phone for a week and I can say that this is a really good phone. It has a really nice feeling when in the hand in use and the screen and the way it works and is all that I have come to expect from HTC. One thing that really stands out it the way it works with MS Exchange sync if I use the Samsung to sync with work email ever hour it would kill the battery in around 6 hours so I have had to get a 3rd party app to do this to get good battery life from the S2 but with the HTC the exchange sync works just as it should and does not kill the battery. In fact the HTC battery life is very good with my use. I have even tried streaming a movie to my TV and it does not seems to use to much battery life. I can say that so far I am really pleased with this phone and it nice to go back to HTC. While the screen is not as good at the S2 screen it is still a very good screen and it higher res than the S2. I would recommend this phone to anyone that asks me about it and it just such a good package. Well done HTC another great phone.
